BetaComm Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 6, 2026

BetaComm ("the app") is a local-network group voice chat app for climbing gyms, published by Theoretical Climbing. It works without accounts and without internet — phones connect directly to each other over a local WiFi hotspot.

What we collect: nothing

We do not operate any servers, and the app does not send your data to us — we have nowhere to send it. The app requires no account, no name, no email, and no sign-in.

Voice audio

Your microphone audio is transmitted in real time, directly from your phone to the other phones in your room over the local network. It is never recorded, never stored, and never sent over the internet. When you leave a room, the connection — and the audio — stops.

Permissions the app uses

  • Microphone — to transmit your voice to the room. Active only while you are in a room; a persistent notification is shown the whole time.

  • Camera — to scan the host's QR code when joining a room. Frames are processed on the device and never stored.

  • Nearby devices / Location — required by Android to create or connect to the room's WiFi hotspot. The app does not determine, store, or share your location.

  • Notifications — to show the ongoing "in a room" notification while the app runs in the background.

Advertising

The app shows a banner ad from Google AdMob on the home screen (ads require an internet connection and never appear inside a room). Google may collect device identifiers and ad-related data to serve and measure ads, as described in Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses data from apps using AdMob. We do not receive or store any of this data ourselves.

Children

BetaComm is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from anyone — including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
